Ülemiste City begins expansion of its education complex
The expansion of the Ülemiste City education complex will begin in early August, enabling Tallinn International School to accommodate more students in the future. The extension will be completed by September 2027, and the total cost of the investment is approximately 4.2 million euros.
“Interest in Tallinn International School has grown rapidly since the completion of the new school building in January 2025. The school currently has 350 students from more than 50 nationalities, and the expansion will allow us to welcome even more students and provide them with better conditions,” said Sten Pärnits, Chairman of the Management Board of Mainor Ülemiste.
The extension was designed by 3+1 Architects, who also designed the other buildings in the education complex. The contractor is Fund Ehitus OÜ.
A distinctive feature of the building is its accessible green roof, which is part of the active school concept, mitigates the urban heat island effect, and helps absorb rainwater.
The green roof will be used to test cooling and permeable materials, targeted landscaping, and sensor-based irrigation as part of the European Union Horizon project PROTECT. The project involves the City of Tallinn, TalTech, and Mainor Ülemiste AS, and its goal is to create an environment through digital solutions that reduces the impact of urban heat islands.
The construction will also cause some inconveniences: it will limit parking between Health Center 1 and the education complex, as well as in Parking Lot D. For safety reasons, the public children’s playground will be relocated to the green area behind the community building, where it will be farther away from construction noise and vehicles.
The Ülemiste City education complex opened in January 2025. It is home to Tallinn International School, Estonia’s largest privately initiated international school, which offers internationally accredited IB education. In addition to preschool, primary, basic, and upper secondary education, the school provides the Ülemiste City community with international childcare and kindergarten services, hobby groups, and after-school care.
