On Summer Evenings Ülemiste City Has Open-Air Cinema

,   3 minute reading

On four evenings in July and August, Ülemiste City’s open-air cinema will screen beloved film classics that have secured their place in cinematic history through the work of directors Steven Spielberg and Alfred Hitchcock, and actors Heath Ledger, Sam Neill, Grace Kelly, and Christopher Lloyd.

For the second year in a row, an open-air cinema will be held on the rooftop of the Ülemiste City Community Building (Valukoja 9), bringing audiences beloved classic films on summer evenings in collaboration with Elektriteater. This year’s programme features four films from different genres and decades: A Knight’s TaleJurassic ParkRear Window, and Back to the Future.

The open-air cinema is a community initiative of Ülemiste City and was made possible through the community fund. The first screenings on the Community Building rooftop, organised together with Elektriteater, took place last year.

“Last year, the open-air cinema proved to be very popular, so we decided to offer this open-air film experience again this summer,” says Sten Pärnits, Chairman of the Management Board of Mainor Ülemiste, the company developing Ülemiste City. According to Pärnits, the open-air cinema is a great example of how community ideas help develop the campus and strengthen a sense of belonging, while also making it an enjoyable destination not only for companies based there, but for the wider city community as well.

The first screening takes place this Wednesday with A Knight’s Tale (2001), which featured Heath Ledger in his first major leading role. The film tells the story of William Thatcher, a poor young man who poses as a nobleman in order to compete in jousting tournaments and achieve fame. In pursuit of his dreams, he must conceal his true origins, face formidable opponents, and win the heart of the woman he loves.

Audiences will also have the opportunity to enjoy Steven Spielberg’s legendary, multi-Oscar-winning Jurassic Park on the big screen, as well as Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window, widely regarded as one of the finest films of the 20th century. Released in 1954, the film stars James Stewart and Grace Kelly. The story centres on a photographer confined to a wheelchair who, while observing neighbours in the building across from his apartment, begins to suspect that a murder has been committed. As he tries to uncover the truth, he and those close to him find themselves in increasingly dangerous situations.

The final screening of the season will take audiences on a journey through time with Back to the Future, showing how people in 1985 imagined the future. The film stars Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd.

Tickets for the open-air cinema cost €8 and include complimentary popcorn and a drink. Tickets can be purchased via Fienta.

Screenings will begin on the rooftop of the Community Building (Valukoja 9) approximately 45 minutes after sunset. In the event of rain or strong winds, the screening will be moved indoors, and ticket holders will be notified separately.
