“We have all once been children who create something exciting on the first impulse and from the first available materials,” says Laura Suurmets. “The older we get, the more the childlike mind and joy in childish silliness disappear.”

This idea is also the starting point for “The Ülemiste Boy” – a work whose centre is the symbol of the inner child. The boy invites the viewer to remember the joy of discovery, creativity and playfulness that often remain in the background in everyday life.

An important role is played by the boy’s glasses, which reflect people of different backgrounds and nationalities. “The talents of different nationalities, who are at the centre of the supergraphic, are reflected from the boy’s glasses,” the author explains. “It is clear that Ülemiste City keeps and values its talents highly.”

The geometric triangles that form the background carry a deeper meaning. “The background with triangles symbolises the different events, companies, buildings, learning and community gathered in Ülemiste City,” Suurmets describes. “Each fragment is connected with the others, supporting and complementing one another.”

The result is a visually impactful and meaningful work that brings together playfulness, community and the identity of a contemporary urban space, and brings the viewer the curiosity and childlike nature of childhood.
