Substation building on Sepapaja Street

“Silent Observers” is an illustrative mural created by Kristi Kindel, based on personal observations and reflecting the calmer and more contemplative side of the Ülemiste City campus. The work was completed in cooperation with the art collective Piiritus, whose execution transformed the digitally created design into a large-scale painting in the urban space.

At the centre of the design are three seated girls – silent observers, whose depiction originated from a real-life moment. The artist describes the inspiration as a chance encounter with a young person sitting at the edge of a churchyard, whose presence and details – such as distinctive glasses and a simple gesture – left a strong visual impression. Through such captured moments, the artist creates characters who have their own story, yet remain open and interpretable to the viewer at the same time.

The idea of the work is also connected to its location on the campus – a space has been created where the “silent observers” blend into the environment and invite passers-by to pause for a moment and notice. Pets also play an important role alongside the characters, referring to the everyday life of Ülemiste City and to details that create a sense of community. In this way, a whole emerges where human warmth and everyday moments intertwine with the dynamics of the urban space.

The colour palette has been chosen as a tribute to Ülemiste City’s well-known “Umbrella Girl”, creating a visual connection with the existing art in the urban space and enriching it with a new interpretation. This creates a unified yet multilayered environment where different works enter into dialogue with one another.

“Silent Observers” is not merely an illustrative image, but a reflection on noticing and presence. It brings forward moments that often go unnoticed, but through which a connection with the surroundings and with other people is formed. The work invites the viewer to slow down and see the campus not only as a place of movement and activity, but also as a space of quiet, meaningful moments.
