““Neurocircus” is an interactive artwork and playful spatial experience created by Erki Koho and Jana Kislatš, which turns the everyday stairwell of the Puusepa building in Ülemiste City into a life-sized playground. It is not merely a visual design, but a physical and mental dice game where movement, imagination, colleagues and a world inspired by neuroscience meet.

The work invites people to move on the stairs for a reason that stimulates both the body and the mind at the same time. The steps become a game board: a total of 200 numbered stair steps and 60 varied colourful game squares have been created. The player moves upwards on the stairs, but may land on a square that gives a bonus, presents a small challenge or directs them back instead. In this way, ordinary movement between floors becomes an unexpected and engaging experience.

“Neurocircus” is inspired by the classic circus game, but places it in a neuro-themed key. The stairwell is illustrated with visuals inspired by nerve cells, the brain and circus performers, creating an imaginative and slightly surreal game world. Short facts about neuroscience also await players on the walls, which means the work offers not only movement and entertainment, but also adds an educational dimension to the experience.

The structure of the game is deliberately simple and accessible. No separate application is needed: the dice roll takes place on a smart device through a QR code, but everything else – the squares, tasks, movement instructions and visual clues – is physically visible on the walls and steps of the stairwell. This makes the experience digitally supported, but still a game fully experienced in space and in the body.

Team spirit is also an important part of the work. Participants can move together, complete tasks side by side, share impressions and encourage one another. In this way, the stairwell becomes a social meeting place, not simply a passageway during the working day.

“Neurocircus” has been created to turn an everyday office stairwell into a moving, social and mentally freeing experience. It gives an opportunity to move and maintain health, take a mental break during the working day, awaken curiosity and imagination, and share fun moments with colleagues. The result is an environment that supports well-being, creativity and doing things together, and turns art into an active experience, not only an object to be viewed.”
