Seated Robot
“Seated Robot” is a wooden sculpture by Juri Vavulin that combines a playful urban space, a technological figure and a sense of human presence. The work is placed where there used to be a stone path that did not lead to a clear destination. Now the path guides the viewer to a wooden humanoid robot, beside which one can sit and engage with the artwork directly.
The sculpture acts as a friendly and approachable comment on the smart city identity of Ülemiste City. The campus, where many companies operate in the fields of IT, technology and innovation, provides a natural background for the work. The health campus located near the robot adds another layer of meaning, pointing towards a future in which technology may become an increasingly visible part of work, healthcare and everyday environments.
The choice of material makes the work especially expressive. The wooden robot creates a contrast between a high-tech image and a natural, handcrafted material. As a result, “Seated Robot” does not appear as a symbol of a cold machine, but rather as a companion that invites passers-by to pause, sit and reflect on the relationship between humans and technology. The author of the sculpture and bench, Juri Vavulin, is an Estonian wood sculptor whose work is strongly shaped by woodworking skills and chainsaw carving.
